Faculty Toolkit: D2L Tools & Tips

Course

Critical Library Research Skills is a free D2L course designed to assist students with the basics of the research process. The course provides an overview of the steps for selecting and developing a topic for research, formulating a research strategy, finding and critically evaluating sources, and the ethical use of information through citation.

Instructors have two options for utilizing this material:  1) students self-enroll in the course or 2) instructors can contact the eLearning department to copy the files into their course shell and customize as desired. There are 5 modules, which include video tutorials, and you can use all of the modules or only select modules as you need them in your course. You have the ability to modify any of the modules to better fit with your course and assignments as you see fit.

To self-enroll in the course, sign into D2L and click "Self Registration." If you want the files copied into your class, email msubonline@msubillings.edu and include the course name where you want the files placed.

At the top of every D2L page is a navigation bar. Click 'Self Registration' to enroll in the Research Skills course.

Linking to Library Databases

When you point students to articles in our databases, it won't always work to copy-and-paste the URL directly from your browser's address bar. Look for links that begin with http://proxybl.lib.montana.edu/login?url=.

Link directly to a database via the following steps.

  1. Find the database on the Databases A–Z list.
  2. Right-click on the database link.
  3. Choose "copy shortcut"/"copy link location" to copy the stable URL.
  4. Use the "Insert Stuff" on the D2L toolbar to insert the link.

Widget

Make sure your Library Widget is active in D2L! This widget includes links to helpful library resources and the library's contact information.
