Student Training: Services & Equipment

IT / Printing Info

One new cool thing this semester is that we now have some IT friends in the building. They are located on the 1st floor in the InfoCommons area. (If you take a left at the bottom of the stairs their desk will be straight ahead.) Some folks already know they're here and will specifically ask for them, and other times if a student is having a technical printing or computer problem we can direct them to get help from IT downstairs.

1st Floor vs 2nd Floor Computers

What's the deal? Which ones are better? What's going on here?

At this time all computers are for students only. They are first come, first serve and do not have a time limit.

How do I log on? It says I need a username and password????

Regardless of which floor you're on, students, staff, and faculty will use their NetID & associated password to log on.

It's the same username & password as you use for D2L.

The other important difference is that the printer on 1st CANNOT print in color, but the printer on the 2nd floor CAN!

Photocopiers

The student printer machine on the 2nd floor also makes copies! They can be paid for with print cards and used by students. If a community person already has an existing print card they will still be able to use the copy machine, but we will not be able to allow new community borrowers to do so.

To copy, they will simply swipe their print card or student ID (or log in at the machine) and there will be a button that says "Copy".

The copy machine in the back to the left of the phone box (pictured below) does not take U-cards or money and is for faculty or staff use only. It is mostly used by our Library folks but occasionally other staff/faculty people come in to use it, so don't be alarmed if you see someone you don't recognize copying away.

Is there a scanner I can use?

Yes! We have TWO very cool KIC scanners! One is on the 2nd floor next to the service desk and the other is near the printer on 1st floor. KIC is a fun acronym for Knowledge Information Center. The KIC scanner is a pretty slick system, it's user friendly and comes in handy often! It is free for anyone to use. You can just lay the item to be scanned on the black mats and hit "scan". Once you you're finished scanning, you can either email it to yourself or save it to a USB. If the file is large, it may take a few minutes for it to send. There is even an app available that gives you lots more options. See either kiosk for further info.

The login info for the upstairs scanner is:

Study Room Reservation Info

The Library admin, Nicole, is in charge of making all the study room reservations. You can check which rooms are reserved if someone is looking for open spaces here. You can direct them in to the office to talk to Nicole to make the reservation. If they have questions about the rooms, there is a LibGuide available with more information. If Nicole is not around here is the procedure for space reservation:

1st Floor Compact Shelving

When the light at the top is green it is ready to move!

When the light is flashing red, first make sure there's no one in the open aisle. There are sensors in between the shelves so nobody will get crushed when they close. If the aisle is empty, you'll need to hit "stop/reset" at the end of the aisle where it's flashing.

How to Pay for Printing

"I need to print something but I've never printed here before. What do I do?"

If the person asking you this is a community patron who has logged onto a 2nd floor computer, they will need to purchase a print card.

Things to know about print cards:

  • The card itself costs $1 and are purchased at the kiosk.
  • Once the card has been purchased they need to load money onto it at the kiosk.
  • The kiosk DOES NOT GIVE CHANGE. If they load a five dollar bill, they will have $5 on that card to use for printing.
  • If a student has a new print card, you will need to register their card on PaperCut OR they can register the card at the printer their first time. There are instructions posted at the printer for this as well.
  • If a student has already purchased a print card and doesn't have their Ucard they may use the print card just as they would their Ucard. (If it's a print card they can only load it with cash at the kiosk.)

If a student is using their print card, they can load cash onto their card at the kiosk or if they'd like to use a debit or credit card direct them to this website: https://get.cbord.com/portal/full/portal.php

The first time they print they will be asked at the printer to associate their card with their account. This will always be netID and password. They will be prompted to log-in with PaperCut at their computer the first time they send a print job.

Printing costs (as of October 2020)

Note that the 1st floor printer does NOT print in color but the

2nd floor printer does print in color!

Printing 101

We are now able to offer wireless printing! The first time they use a new device they will have to set it up with the wireless network. First things first, they MUST be on MSUBmobile wireless! See here for instructions. There are also printed out instructions on the shelf to the left of the circ comp.

Also here is some info from our friends at IT  here.

White boards & markers

There are white boards in the study rooms, but there are a few portable ones for student use as well.

If someone needs a big one, there are two double sided rolling ones usually kept in the tree area.

If someone needs a smaller one, there is a table in the tree area that has a hanging one on each side.

There should be markers with them (or in a cup on a table in the tree area) but we also keep a box of Expo markers on the shelf to the left of the circ comp that are for student use. These are also the ones that can be given out to students using study rooms. (Each study room should have its own markers but they occasionally disappear.)

Charging Stations

The Library has two courtesy charging stations. One is located on the 2nd floor and the other is up on 3rd. They both look like this:

WiFi Basics

Who can log in? What's the difference? How do I log in?

For faculty/staff & students, we suggest using the MSUB Mobile option. You log in with your netID and password. See the University IT "How to Connect to Wireless" page. A netID & password is required for MSUB Mobile, community patrons will select MSUB Visitor.

Record & Go Studio

This cool site can be reached via the Library website or directly at msubillings.libcal.com/booking/OBS

Also, check out this cool Record & Go Studio LibGuide!

When someone comes up to the Ask Here Desk and asks to check out the recording studio stuff, the first thing to do is make sure they have it reserved. We like keeping track of usage and the reservation info really helps us! And checking for a reservation prevents accidental double booking. You can check the schedule by clicking here and finding the section that says "Book the Room"

In order to book the studio, patrons will need to use an MSUB email.

Available spots are green like this:

If a time slot is reserved it will be red. You can check on who has what times scheduled by clicking the box that says "Confirmed Bookings".

Floating TVs

We have a couple new TVs on rollie carts available for student use. They are some on 1st floor and some up on 3rd and students may move them around as needed. They don't need to be checked out and are available on a first come, first serve basis.
