Know Your Exits

Door alarms

The doors on 1st floor have alarms wired into them. We will show you how to lock & unlock these doors without setting off the alarm, as well as what to do should the alarm go off for whatever reason.

Campus Police

Any time there's something going on that doesn't feel right or makes you feel uncomfortable. If it's during the day when staff are here, let someone know what's going on first (either the ref person on duty or one of your access services supervisors).

If you are here on a night or weekend when staff aren't around, don't hesitate to call. A great example is if someone is doing something inappropriate, say watching videos they shouldn't be watching in public, and needs to leave the building. The officers are trained to escort folks out so we'd rather call them to handle it than put you guys in a scary position.

If there is an emergency, call 911.

If you need to call the campus police (non emergency):

406-657-2147

This is a non-emergent line that rings to the UPD office. If there is a concern, be prepared to give as much description as possible. This is where we would call if we needed an officer to do a walkthrough.

If you're in a situation where you need to call someone to come out and help you but don't want to be fully obvious, just use the code word. Call a staff member and drop the code name. Something like: "Hey, have you seen Code Name around?" or "Hey, I need to talk to Code Name" would work.

Occasionally the on-duty officer will come through the building and just walk around each floor. This is just part of their schedule and is nothing to be alarmed about. We like having them as a presence on campus. Give them a wave and say hey!

If you haven't already done so, register to receive MSUB alerts here.

1st Floor Cameras

Once upon a time there was a 1st floor circ desk. Now that we don't have someone on the 1st floor to monitor the door, we have security cameras.

All students accounts should have the feed from the cameras. When you're working at the Ask Here Desk, just try to keep an eye on them. You don't have to watch it constantly, just be aware of it so you know when something is out of the ordinary. If that happens, let a staff person know.

On the computers the program that they connect to is called Axis Camera Station Client.

If they don't connect when you turn the computers on type in "Axiscs" and it should work!

Reporting Building Issues

undefined

When you are doing floor counts or helping a patron find something and happen to notice something is damaged, fully broken, overflowing, etc. please help us out by letting us know. If it's during the day, first let Daniel know first so she can report it to Nicole who will be able to put in a work order to get it fixed. If it's after hours, please send Daniel an email or leave her a detailed note.

If it's an "emergency" that needs to be dealt with immediately (like water shooting out of a toilet) you may call the non emergency campus police line (657-2147) and they will get in touch with someone to get it fixed. And also please let Chandra know that you did so.

When reporting building issues, make sure to include the date, approximate time and a specific location.

The more info the better!

Other Privacy Items

Just more one quick safety related thing I wanted to mention. It may never come up but just in case I wanted to talk about what to do should someone approach the desk and ask about someone's work schedule or contact info. We really don't want to give out that kind of information to strangers. If someone asks you for a coworkers schedule tell them you do not know it or just refer the question to a staff member.
