Student Training: FAQ

Patron FAQ

  • "Is there a scanner I can use?"
    • Yes! The KIC scanner is free to use. Patrons can save their stuff to a flash drive as a PDF or email a PDF from the KIC scanner to themselves.
  • "Is there a lost and found?"
    • Yes! We have a shelf where we collect lost items that get turned in. If it's something valuable (like a wallet) we may lock it in the cash drawer. If we don't have their item, they may contact the main campus lost & found at 657-2147 or visit University Police at the corner of the parking garage.
  •  "I have an appointment with someone in advising, where do I go?"
    • Advising & Career Services is in Library 100 - it's part of the building but you have to go outside to get there. It's just south of the first floor entrance. From the desk, folks will need to go outside, downstairs & to the left.
  • "My professor has books on reserve? (See also: "My teacher put a book on hold for our class")"
    • Reserves are located on the back of the island and have a pink slip around the back cover. These can be checked out like any other book.
  • "What is the procedure to check books out?"
    • Students just need their university ID. Books check out for until the end of the current semester and students do not have a limit to how many they may check out. If they are not a faculty, staff, or student they will need to sign up as a Community Borrower.
  • "Can I hang a poster?"
    • Yes!  We maintain the board near the desk and the one down the hall across from the vending machines. Both are periodically monitored and any inappropriate material will be removed.
  •  "How do I reserve a study room?"
    • Study room reservations are made with the library admin, Nicole. If she is away at lunch or at a meeting, give the student her card and have them send her an email. Nicole's email: nicole.bernard1@msubillings.edu Click here for further study room reservation info!
  •  "How do I log on to the computers?"
    • For faculty, staff, and students they will use their NetID & password! We will need to sign up community patrons computer access through Pharos.
  •  "How do I print?"
    • If it's the first time, the card will need to be registered at the printer with netID and password. The printer's name is PrintAnywhereStudent. There are instructions for printing wirelessly in the printing binder located in the binder drawer. Or click here for instructions provided by our friends in IT.
  •  "What's the deal with the Record & Go Studio?"
    • Click the link for more!
  •  "Can I have food & drinks with me in the Library?"
    • Yes! It's even possible to order food and have it delivered here. We just ask that folks clean up after themselves (it's on the behavior policy sheet) and let us know if there's a spill or mess somewhere.
  •  "I have an appointment with Advising/Juanita?" OR "Where is Library 100?"
    • Advising & Career Services is PART of the Library building but is only accessible by first going outside. Their door is just south of our first floor book outside book drop.
  • "Do you take book donations?"
    • The short answer is no, at this time we do not accept donations. If they have more questions, we can give them Nicole's contact information as she handles that area. If they ask where they CAN donate them, they can always contact the public library OR if they are text books or school related they could check with the department that teaches that subject.
  • "Is there a microwave I can use?"
    • Yes, its over in the YEP extension.
  • "I didn't realize the door was locked, now my stuff is locked in 311 or 312. Help!"
    • There is a key in the key cabinet for those rooms! If you need to help someone out, please hang on to the key and walk up there with them to unlock the door.
  • "Is there a photocopier?"
    • This is sort of a two part answer. If they are a student looking to make regular photocopies they may use the regular student printer. If they have printed before & have money in their account they can log in at the printer and use the copy function, if they have not printed they'll have to set up their card and use their card. If they are staff or faculty from elsewhere on campus they may use the faculty/staff printer back by the phone box and log in with their netID info. The other part of the answer is if they are looking to make a copy and have it electronically they may use the KIC scanner. The KIC scanner is free to use and available to all patrons.

Who Does What

If a patron is trying to get a hold of someone who works here that isn't in at the moment, we do have a stash of business cards at the reference desk to give out. There is a phone list near each phone but for quick reference if you're on the computer, you can also find one here
