AI Tools (ChatGPT, Copilot, & Large Language Models)

How can AI be used for classes? At MSUB, this is guided by the Policy on Faculty and Student Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Academic Work. The guidance below summarizes key points for students to know.

Faculty are strongly encouraged to read the full policy!

Guidance for students

1. Your instructors have the authority to determine what, when, and how AI may be used in their courses.

2. If you use AI, you are responsible for making sure the output is accurate and appropriate.

3. When you use AI, you must disclose its use, including the name of the specific AI tools and the nature of their contribution.

4. If your instructor clearly states AI expectations for the course, then breaking their rules is academic misconduct.

The librarians say…

Remember, your instructors create AI usage rules for your benefit. College is an opportunity for you to learn and grow as a writer, researcher, and critical thinker. If AI is doing all the work for you, that reduces college to an exercise in AI prompt engineering, and you are squandering the opportunity to develop key skills yourself. That’s not worth your time, and it's not worth your instructor's time either.
