The Federal government classifies all manufacturing and service industries and provides them with a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code, which facilitates comparing industry statistics. The SIC codes are often used in electronic and print sources to classify establishments in the same industry. Beginning in 1997, the Census Bureau because using the North American Industrial Classification (NAICS -- pronounced "nakes") because this system is more closely aligned with international codes. You may need to use both the SIC and NAICS codes in your research.
